Public Consultation for Kimmage Rd West-Whitehall Rd Junction Upgrade

Skeleton Map of the Junction

Kimmage Road West / Whitehall Road Junction Upgrade

Dublin City Council (DCC) would like to invite the public to have their say on plans for the Kimmage Road West / Whitehall Road Junction Upgrade. This proposed scheme aims to reconfigure the junction of Kimmage Road and Whitehall Road by improving the pedestrian and cycling infrastructure into the junction. This new infrastructure will include two signalised pedestrian crossings, cycle tracks, and cycle signal phases in the traffic lights at the junction.

The two new pedestrian crossings will be incorporated into the existing junction traffic signals and will be located on the east and west arms of Kimmage Road West. Currently, there are no adequate pedestrian crossing facilities on these two arms of the junction.

Sketch of the Junction

Part of Whitehall Road Active Travel Scheme

This junction forms part of the Whitehall Road Active Travel Scheme being developed by South Dublin County Council (SDCC) which has gone through a Part 8 Public Consultation. The Kimmage Road West / Whitehall Road Junction lies at the boundary of DCC and SDCC and its footprint is located in the two administrative areas, but the operation and maintenance of the junction is in the hands of DCC. For more information on the Whitehall Road Active Travel Scheme, visit: Wellington Lane Walking and Cycling Scheme | South Dublin County Council's Online Consultation Portal

The two-way cycle track being developed by SDCC on Whitehall Road will pass through this junction and cycle tracks will be provided within the junction to give a continuous passage for cyclists. A cyclists’ green phase will be provided in the traffic lights to facilitate the passage of cyclists through this junction.

Junction Upgrade Benefits

This junction upgrade will:

·       Enhance safety by providing controlled crossings for pedestrians and cyclists, together with kerb build outs, to control the speed of vehicles through the junction

·       Improve the experience of footpath users by upgrading the footpaths

·       Encourage increased levels of physical activity through the provision of a safe route and connectivity to the other walking and cycling routes
