Dublin City Council (DCC) would like to invite the public to have their say on plans for upgrading the South Circular Road – Brookfield Road Junction. This junction is at the entrance to the new National Children’s Hospital and St James’ Hospital. The objective of the scheme is to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists through the junction. This public consultation is open from 5th of June – 2nd of July 2025.

This junction upgrade is part of the Kilmainham to Ballsbridge South City Loop scheme in the DCC Active Travel Network. When fully completed, it will provide 9 km of high quality walking and cycling facilities linking Kilmainham to Ballsbridge. The proposed route will also link Rialto, Crumlin, Kimmage, Harold's Cross, Rathmines, Ranelagh and Donnybrook.

Key Features of the Scheme

  • Change the Brookfield Road - South Circular Road junction to a protected junction, separating pedestrians, cyclists and drivers
  • Provide a kerb-separated southbound cycle track from the entrance of National Children’s Hospital to Rialto Bridge
  • Provide a new pedestrian crossing on the southern arm of the junction on South Circular Road. This will result in signalised pedestrian crossings on all three arms of the junction
  • Provide new and improved footpaths and road surfacing

Benefits of the Scheme

• Improve pedestrian access to and from St. James’ Hospital and the new Children’s Hospital by adding a new signalised crossing on South Circular Road

• Enhance safety of pedestrians and cyclists with a protected junction

• Improve walking and cycling connections to the Kilmainham to Thomas Street Active Travel Scheme and Rialto Luas station at James’ Walk

Encourage increased levels of walking and cycling for staff and visitors to St. James’ Hospital and the new National Children’s Hospital
